You did it too. As a kid you'd puff out your cheeks, put on a serious face, and yell at your brother: "¡Cállate, cállate, que me desesperas!" ("Shut up, shut up, you're driving me crazy!"). Nobody told you why it was so funny. It just was.

The kid with the cheeks was Quico. And the question we all ask years later is what happened to him. Is he still alive? What does he do? Where is he now?

Short answer: yes, he's alive. Carlos Villagrán, the man behind Quico, was born on January 12, 1944 in Mexico City. He's 82. And he's not exactly hiding: he still takes the stage, announces his retirement and comes back, and admitted in an interview something half the world relates to — he hasn't written his will because doing it feels like "inviting death."

Before the vecindad, he was a press photographer

Almost nobody knows this: before acting, Villagrán worked as a press photographer. The camera was his thing. Then he moved into television, and Chespirito cast him in El Chavo del 8, where Quico lived from 1973 to 1978.

The puffed cheeks, the sailor suit, the "¡No me simpatizas!" ("I don't like you!"). Doña Florinda's spoiled kid became the character everyone imitated on the playground. He didn't need a script: puff out the cheeks and the whole room was laughing.

The fight that broke up the vecindad

In 1978 it was over. Villagrán left the show after a fight with Chespirito over the character. It wasn't a friendly goodbye: it was one of those breakups that split fans into camps and people still talk about it.

Years later, in 1987, he starred in his own program in Venezuela: ¡Ah qué Kiko!, spelled with a K for rights reasons. The show never took off like El Chavo. But Quico was already immortal: no new show could erase the kid in the sailor suit.

The retirement that never happens

Since then he has announced his retirement from the character several times. The loudest was in 2023: he said he was leaving Quico behind, and then he came back. At this point nobody fully believes the goodbye, and maybe he doesn't either.

In March 2026 something happened that says a lot about his relationship with the character: he canceled an event in Chile because the organizers were promoting him as Quico, when he had stopped playing the character. His own stated position: he'll keep going as long as he has his health and the audience keeps showing up. The kid from the vecindad is his blessing and his shadow at the same time.

His health, in his own words

He has said himself that he received radiotherapy for a prostate issue. No drama: he said it's behind him and he feels fine today. At 82, that's good news, however you say it.

The will he hasn't written

And here's the detail that stays with you. In an interview he was asked about his will and admitted he hasn't written one because doing it feels like "inviting death." Read that again. How many people do you know who think exactly the same thing and won't say it out loud? The kid who puffed his cheeks is scared of the same thing you and I are scared of.

If nostalgia got you, make a plan out of it

Quico taught us that laughter is free: some puffed cheeks and the will to tease your brother was enough. This weekend, apply the same logic with your family.
