What happened to El Ñoño? Édgar Vivar at 77

There was a kid in the courtyard who always brought his sandwich packed by his mom and mocked El Chavo for having no toys. But one thing gave him away: the man collecting the rent was his dad. Ñoño was the rich kid among the poor, and Édgar Vivar gave him life.
And here's the answer first, because back in January a lie spread online that he was gone: Édgar Vivar is alive, he's 77, and he's still working. He was born December 28, 1948, in Mexico City. The latest: in September 2026 he announced he's postponing his spine surgery to the second quarter of 2027 while he keeps filming Vecinos. This is his story, with verified facts.
Ñoño and Señor Barriga: two characters, one actor
In El Chavo del 8, Vivar played two roles at once. One was Señor Barriga, the courtyard landlord: light suit, briefcase in hand, and the impossible mission of collecting the rent from Don Ramón, who would greet him with a "¡Ya llegó!" and slip out the back. The other was his son, Ñoño: chubby, oversized school cap, a rich mom packing his lunchbox, and the line every kid repeated, "tengo el cuerpo de niño bien alimentado" — "I'm just well-fed".
Ñoño was the only kid in the courtyard who wasn't poor, which gave him his own comedy — the envied and the bullied at once. And one fact: Vivar was the only one in the main cast with a real college degree.
The doctor who became a comedian
Before the laughter, the white coat. Édgar Ángel Vivar Villanueva trained as a physician at UNAM, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, and practiced medicine. Theater and television won him over, but the doctor's discipline stayed: he's famous among colleagues for being punctual, prepared, and calm on set. He has said his experience as a medical doctor still helps him face his own health issues calmly.
Peru 2024: he retired from tours, not from the craft
In July 2024, Vivar announced in Peru something many mistook for a full retirement. It was his twentieth visit to the country; he was performing as the Wizard of Oz in the Chola Chabuca circus, and he said it would be his last year of touring and live stages. His words were clear: "Siempre he querido mucho al Perú, esta es mi visita número 20 y es la última vez. Este será el último año que hago gira, y despedirme en Perú es honrar la vida" — "I've always loved Peru, this is my twentieth visit and it's the last time. This will be my last year of touring, and saying goodbye in Peru honors my life".
The decision had two reasons: age (75 at the time) and an accident during the last Vecinos recording, where he lost his balance and got a head wound. But watch the nuance: in the same announcement he said a film and new seasons of Vecinos were ahead. He stepped off the stage, not off the set. And the sweet detail: he had already said goodbye to the Ñoño character fifteen years earlier, also in Peru.
"I haven't died yet": the January 2026 hoax
On the night of January 12, 2026, social media filled with condolences: viral posts on X and Facebook reported Édgar Vivar's death, supposedly at 77. It was false. The next morning, Televisa's morning show Hoy interviewed him and he settled it with his trademark humor: "No, no me he muerto todavía, no tengo planes de hacerlo y espero que no venga una contraorden de allá arriba" — "No, I haven't died yet, I have no plans to do so, and I hope no counter-order comes from up there".
He said the rumors don't bother him, that he'd rather be on people's lips than forgotten, and that he's actually happy, eager to keep working, with telenovela and film offers on the table. His family and friends, who got anguished calls from abroad, had the worst of it.
The spine: the surgery that keeps waiting
In May 2026, Vivar told Televisa Espectáculos something he's carried for years: his spine is deviated and he needs a rectification surgery. His words: "Todo se reduce a una sola palabra: edad. Tengo desviada la columna, entonces tienen que hacerme rectificación de columna, pero son seis meses de reposo" — "It all comes down to one word: age. My spine is deviated, so they have to straighten it, but it's six months of rest".
The operation is complicated by a heart condition: five stents in his coronary arteries, which force doctors to take extra precautions. In September 2026 came the plan adjustment: he didn't cancel it, he postponed it. He wants to finish his Vecinos recording commitments first, and now targets the second quarter of 2027. Recovery is estimated at about six months, though he's reserved eight: six to recover and two for a trip he wants to take once he can walk normally again.
Where to watch him today
To see Édgar Vivar in 2026, the straightest path is Vecinos, where he continues as Hipólito Menchaca, and El Chavo del 8, which returned to broadcast TV and Netflix. In 2025 he cameoed in the biographical series Chespirito: Sin querer queriendo (HBO Max) as Agustín Delgado, the director who gave Roberto Gómez Bolaños the nickname "Chespirito". The actor who played as a kid in the courtyard, in the series about the man who created the courtyard, playing the man who named the creator. He's also done voice acting for years: Ratatouille, Up, and several Despicable Me films.
If nostalgia hit you, turn it into a plan
Ñoño taught us that memories are better in a crowd, with family together and laughter out loud. If you want something like that in person —live music, free festivals, people singing together—, check the Honda Center concerts guide or the Latino Carnaval 2026, free concert. Nostalgia is better in good company.
